Jewellery Care
Pieces that last
require very little.
The materials used at Chez Rémi are chosen specifically because they do not require elaborate maintenance. What follows is what is worth knowing.
Three rules that cover most cases
- Put jewellery on last, take it off first. Perfume, hairspray, and sunscreen are the primary causes of surface degradation. Let everything else dry before wearing.
- Store pieces separately. Gemstones scratch each other. Chains tangle and kink. Cotton pouches, not piled in a dish.
- When in doubt, a soft cloth. This addresses 90% of maintenance needs for all materials.
By Material
316L Stainless Steel
- Storage
- Any — this material is effectively maintenance-free.
- Cleaning
- Soft cloth or mild soap and water. Dry thoroughly before storage.
- Avoid
- Prolonged immersion in chlorinated water. Does not rust or tarnish.
Copper Develops patina
- Storage
- In its pouch, away from humidity.
- Cleaning
- Soft cloth. For oxidation: a small amount of lemon juice and salt, rinse immediately and dry.
- Avoid
- Moisture between wears. Copper develops a natural patina — this is expected and considered part of the piece.
18K Gold Fill
- Storage
- In its pouch, separate from other pieces.
- Cleaning
- Soft cloth only. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Avoid
- Chlorine, salt water, perfume, hairspray. Apply all sprays before wearing.
Natural Gemstones
- Storage
- In individual compartments or wrapped. Stones can scratch each other.
- Cleaning
- Slightly damp cloth only. No ultrasonic cleaners, no chemicals.
- Avoid
- Ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, prolonged sunlight for colour-sensitive stones.
Freshwater Pearl
- Storage
- In its pouch, never in an airtight container — pearls need moisture.
- Cleaning
- Soft damp cloth immediately after wearing. Never submerge.
- Avoid
- Perfume, chlorine, vinegar, acids. Put pearls on last, take them off first.
Silk Thread (Sibhas)
- Storage
- Hanging or coiled loosely. Avoid compression.
- Cleaning
- Spot clean only. Do not submerge.
- Avoid
- Prolonged tension, knotting, sharp corners. Restringing available on request.
Repair & Restringing
Chez Rémi pieces can be repaired or restrung (for sibhas) at cost. If a piece develops a fault in normal wear within two years of purchase, the repair is complimentary.
If you have an older piece that needs attention — including pieces not made by Chez Rémi — contact us. We will assess whether we can help.
